My wife and I rode the Big Papio to Regency yesterday to do some shopping at Whole Foods. I saw this sign on the way and, too, wondered about it.
I almost wonder if it had been hijacked by a graffiti vandal, but it doesn't seem graffiti styled enough, and the image covers the entire surface, from edge to edge. The only marking is the "AJ 68". I can't tell from the photo if the image is printed on the sign, or painted over it.
My first thought was that it reminded me of the sand worms in the Dune movie, or some kind of leech you might find on yourself after taking a dip in a swamp. :)
No matter what it is, it is an interesting piece of art. Thanks for sharing the photo.
"The Lamar Outdoor Advertising Company hired AJ Bredensteiner to paint three signs along 72nd Street near Ralston. Bredensteiner is currently a non-degree grad student studying painting. He graduated last December with a BASA in studio art. His goal is to go to grad school as a master of fine arts student. Bredensteiner is also becoming more involved in the Omaha art scene. The signs come down at the end of this month."
That's all I could find, but to me it seems it's just an advertising company filling blank space on their billboards with something...
i am a friend of ajs. He had already made these paintings before going to Lamar. He asked them about putting the billboards up in Omaha. He was not hired by them. He wanted to do something different with his art to get it noticed and to build his portfolio. Also, the art has been taken down, but they moved it to different locations in the city.
